A while ago I used roplay on a server that tweaked boat speeds. They tweaked it so that the speed of the boats was dependent on its QL, it was a bit like this... Boat QL
| Speed Bonus | 10-39 | -10% | 40-69 | 0% | 70-90 | +10% | 90+ | +25% |
They also made wind of ages castable on boats which gave a small boost. I dont have any idea how much code-fu it would take to add something similar but it would be interesting to have

I'm pretty sure that ql already affects speed with 1.3, but it's not that drastic of a difference. Added: Yeah, from the wiki "The speed of the ship is determined by the quality of the ship and the amount of crew in the ship. 3/12th's of the total speed is based on the crew in the ship. 9/12th's of the total speed is based on the quality level of the ship." Boats on the server are already faster, and there's a limit to how faster they can go without client modification because it would overflow a field in the network protocol (causing boats to go backwards )

Didn't know that, I thought the speed was just dependent on wind and crew count...

It was changed last fall on WO but only came to WU I think in 1.3 update. however I am still confused by the phrasing in the wiki update, stating that 3/4ths of the boats speed is determined by quality. That suggests total speed. Update notes says rather that 3/4ths of the ship's speed bonus is now determined by quality, this apparently replaces the bonus from when each ship had a bonus from full passengers. This meant that PVE boats in particularly benefit from quality in place of stuffing the boat full of AFK alts. PVP stiull gets a greater boost from lots of raiders onboard, than from quality. Which sounds like for most boats is about 1 or 2 km/h and for the caravel up to 5+ extra kmh. Some merchant class ships (corbita) never used to get ANY bonus from passengers compared to oared ships (knarr/sailboat/rowboat) but there was a second update in February that tweaked boat speeds and gave those medium class merchant ships in particular a hefty boost, perhaps to make up for missing out on the quality boost last fall ...? Boat speeds have been tweaked upwards as a percentage of their base speed in low wind according to their relative difficulty to create:Corbita: +26%Cog: +75%Knarr: +2.5%Caravel: +33%Wind bonus has remain unchanged, and speed differences will be most noticeable in little wind. Knarr got the least boost as it benefited so much from the passenger-vs-quality bonus and all-around general uberness in poor winds. little boats got no boost in that update. So total speed boosts for the smallest boats was pretty minor as they got about 1 extra km/h from the first update and none from the second. If boat quality replaced passenger bonus, its unclear whether corbita for example now gets any benefit from "quality" but instead got any boosts solely from the february update which is NOT based off quality.
i would love to see someone actually test out the data and compare a 10Q / 50Q / 90Q boat of each class to see whether the 'quality bonus" applied to all of them equally.
(Actually bdew might be able to tell just from glancing at the code but I don;t know how obtuse the code is on this issue)

On a PVE server the formula is (1 + (NumberOfPassengers + Rarity) / NumberOfSeats) * 3 * MaxSpeed + (1 + (QL - 10) / 90) * 9 * MaxSpeed MaxSpeed is some constant value for that ship type (and is badly named, it's more like it's base speed, not the absolute maximum) On PVP the 3 and 9 are reversed. Edit: Ship type. Not sheep
